William David Johnston, P.M. 33rd Degree, 78, of West Kittanning, PA, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Allegheny General Hospital.

He was born October 21, 1938 in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of William and Helen (Wood) Johnston.

David graduated from South Hills High School in 1956 and lived for many years in the Freeport and Slate Lick areas before moving to Kittanning in 1981. He received his Bachelor's degree from Thiel College and later earned a Master's degree in finance from the American Institute of Finance. David worked in management positions at various banks over the years and retired as a vice president and senior loan officer from Merchants Bank in Kittanning.

He honorably served in the US Air Force Reserves and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Kittanning BPOE #203. David was a 33rd Degree Mason and a strong supporter of the tenets of Free Masonry. He was a member of Kittanning F&AM Lodge #244, where he served as a Past Master. David also belonged to the Knights Templar, the Royal Order of Scotland, the Coudersport Consistory and the Syria Pipe Band, and was an officer in the Syria Shrine.

His memory will be cherished by his wife, Patricia Ann (Crawford) Johnston, whom he married May 9, 1987; children, Debra Watts and husband, Gary, of Bedford Heights, OH, Jeff Campbell and wife, Laura, of Slippery Rock, Jerry Campbell, of Somerset, and Jennifer Butler, of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Seth, Shane, Ryan and Brooke Campbell, and Jacob Butler; great-grandchildren, Noah, Penelope and Grayson Campbell; sister, Janet (Johnston) Caldwell and husband, Frank, of Bedford, OH; brothers, Edward Coyle and John Coyle and wife, Eileen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Susan Conway; first wife, Jane (Mang) Johnston; and brother, Francis Coyle.

The family will receive friends from 10 AM until the time of the Masonic service at 11 AM, with the memorial service immediately following, on Monday, April 10, 2017 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 218 N. Jefferson St., Kittanning, with the Rev. Carl A. Johnson officiating.

Private burial of cremated remains will be in Lawn Haven Burial Estates, Worthington, PA.
