George Evanek

George Evanek, 91, of Huey, Toby Twp., Clarion County, died of congestive heart failure at 8 AM Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Clarview Nursing Home, Sligo, where he had been a resident since mid-March.

Mr. Evanek was born July 17, 1921 in Huey, the son of the late Joseph Evanek and Susan (Charney) Evanek.

In 1943 George's father, a coal miner, was killed in the Slope Mine in Huey. His mother died in 1984. George was a 1939 graduate of Sligo High School and was a WWII Army veteran, proudly serving stateside as a medic.

George worked for a period of time at Owens-Illinois Glass Plant No. 17 in Clarion. He served for 35 years as the Post Master of the Huey Post Office, retiring in 1983. He also operated a confectionary store, which became a hangout for the entire Huey community.

Mr. Evanek was a member of St. Richard Catholic Church in Rimersburg where he was appreciated for his kind donations of afghans that he created for church fund-raising events. He was also a member of the Fiddle-A-Round Square Dancing Group and the Country Steppers Line Dancing Group. George belonged to the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and was a longtime member of VFW Post 7132 and American Legion Post 954, both of Rimersburg.

George will be greatly missed by his sister, Madeline Evanek, of Huey, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary L. Bartley, Margaret Colyvas and Ella Brooks; and brothers, Joseph Evanek and John Evanek.

The family will receive friends from 4 -7 PM on Monday, June 17, 2013 at Bauer-Hillis Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 758 Main St., Rimersburg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at St. Richard Roman Catholic Church, Purity Ave., Rimersburg, with the Rev. William Kuba as celebrant.
