Martha H. Best Elliott

Martha H. (Shook) Best Elliott, 91, of Curllsville, PA, was called home by Jesus on Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at Clarview Nursing Home.

She was born July 9, 1923 in Sligo, Clarion County, PA, the daughter of Ray H. and Ruby E. (Shearer) Shook.

Martha was the oldest attending member of Grace Community Church of Curllsville, PA. For 31 years, she worked as a postmaster for the United States Post Office of Curllsville, retiring in 1986. She also owned and operated the former Clover Farm General Store from 1956 to 1987. After her retirement, she became a 'winter snow bird' and lived in Yuma, AZ during the winter months until the year of 2006. Martha had many interests, such as gardening and canning vegetables, camping in an RV, making candles, reading, watching birds, and in her younger years she enjoyed sewing. She was happy in the company of her church family and loved hosting the ladies Prayer and Praise Group in her home.

Martha was known for delicious home cooking, and will be best remembered for her strong Christian faith, the love she had for family and friends, and her dry wit humor.

She will be deeply missed by her two sons, James R. Best and wife, Betty of Sewickley, and David W. Best and wife, Patty of Bow, NH; three daughters, Helen M. Bearfield of Curllsville, Constance M. Mannke and husband, Joe of Houston, TX, and Celia E. Ravkind and husband, Ronny of The Woodlands, TX; a sister, Catherine Jean Fagley and husband, Robert of Greenville, PA; one step son, Dennis E. Elliott and wife, Cathy of Putneyville; two step daughters-in-law, June Elliott of Curllsville, and Linda Elliott of Shippenville; eight grandchildren, Jasen Best, Katie Bearfield, David Best, Erinn Best, David Grey Merryman, Stephen Best, Bradley Best, and Peter Best; four great-grandchildren; numerous step grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Valjean Shook; and three special sisters-in-law.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, James O. Best whom she married January 1947 and who died February 14, 1956; second husband, John W. Elliott, Sr. whom she married October 11, 1959 and who died August 15, 1999; two brothers, James P. and Leon A. Shook; two step sons, John W. Elliott, Jr. and Ralph A. Elliott; and one step grandson, John W. Elliott, III.

Family and friends will be received from 12-3 PM and 6-8 PM on Sunday, November 2, 2014, at the Bauer-Hillis Funeral Home, 758 Main St., Rimersburg.

Additional visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of funeral services at 11 AM on Monday, November 3, 2014, at the Grace Community Church, 3225 Curllsville Road, Curllsville, PA, with the Pastor Dan George officiating.

Burial will be in Churchville Cemetery, Curllsville, PA.
