Dean D. Smith, 86, of Kittanning, PA, died Sunday, August 10, 2014, at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.

He was born February 7, 1928 in Dayton, PA, the son of Oscar P. and Olive (Wilson) Smith.

Dean was a lifetime resident of the area and honorably served his country in the US Army during World War II. He was a member of the St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Kittanning and worked in the Shipping Department at Pittsburgh Plate and Glass, retiring with over 45 years of service. Dean was a member of the Kittanning-East Brady Masonic Lodge #244, where he held the distinction of 32nd degree Mason. He also belonged to the Coudersport Consistory and Syria Shrine of Pittsburgh. Dean recently received his 50-year pin for memberships at Masonic Lodge #244 and the Coudersport Consistory.

Dean, along with his wife, Pauline, owned and operated Smith's Boat Dock in Mosgrove for 34 years. They took great pleasure in traveling with their Airstream trailer and were members of the Wally Byam Caravan Club. He and Pauline enjoyed adventure and pulled their Airstream trailer as far south as Cancun, Mexico and as far north as Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, Canada. They had many fond memories of their vacation trips with the Caravan Club to the Statue of Liberty, where they camped at Liberty State Park.

Dean and Pauline spent over 40 winters on Hutchison Island, Florida, enjoying the shores of Jenson Beach and the many wonderful relationships with their great friends from those special excursions. Dean's appreciation for the outdoors led to his love of hunting and fishing in his younger years. He was, above all else, a man who loved his family and will be deeply missed by the many people whose lives he touched.

His memory will be cherished by his daughter, Sandra B. Smith (formerly Wagner), of Kittanning; grandchildren, Amy Wagner, of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Lindsey Wagner, of Hutchison Island, FL; brother, Ernest Smith and wife, Betty, of Kittanning; and sister, Helen Kiffer, of Kittanning.

He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 61 years, F. Pauline (Rumbaugh) Smith, whom he married April 9, 1949 and who died November 29, 2010; brother, Paul Smith; sisters, Mona Rea, Florence Wagner and Margaret Bittinger and Ruby Myers; and infant sister, Garnett Smith.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at the Bauer Funeral Home, 515 N. McKean Street, Kittanning, PA, where a Masonic service will be held at 7 PM.

Additional visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of funeral service at 11 AM on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at the funeral home, with the Rev. John W. Snyder officiating.

Burial will follow at Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery, Cowanshannock Twp., Armstrong Co., PA, where military honors will be presented by the American Legion Honor Guard.

Contributions can be made in Dean's memory to the Kittanning-East Brady Masonic Lodge #244 Charity Fund, 13265 SR 422, Kittanning, PA 16201.
